Message From Your ICG President

Fellow members,

I am pleased to announce that our offer to allow former PCS “Class A” certified clubmakers the opportunity to become ICG certified by completing just the written portion of the ICG certification exam has been a success.  As a result, the Board has voted to continue the discount through June, 2014.  However, in order to reward those members who took advantage of the original offer during 2013, the fee has been increased from $50 to $75 for this offer.
 
At the same time, we will be offering all ICG members not previously affiliated with the PCS the opportunity to become ICG certified for a reduced fee of $125 (normally $150).  This offer also extends through the end of June, 2014.

In parallel with our efforts to have more members become ICG certified, the membership committee is in the process of developing an annual ICG Clubmaker of the Year (COY) awards program.  Although the COY program details are still under development at this time, it is likely that awards will be given in various geographic regions as well as an overall ICG COY who will represent the entire organization for the following year.  A major prerequisite for COY eligibility will be that nominees must be ICG Certified members in order to receive consideration, so you can see how these topics are interrelated.

In addition, the Board voted to modify our dues structure slightly in order to keep up with increasing costs associated with development of Clubmaker of the Year and Distinguished Service award programs, our expanded webinar program, a more ambitious marketing program, web site upgrade & maintenance expenses, development of video training modules, and introduction of a clubfitting certification exam.  Effective July 1, 2014, ICG annual dues will be increased from $75 a year to $100 for all members who are not ICG certified.  ICG certified members will continue to pay the current $75 annual membership fee.  This is one more good reason for members to become ICG-certified.   All members not wishing to become ICG-certified can avoid the $25 increase by renewing their membership prior to June 30, 2014 at the current $75 rate.

I should remind everyone that the changes and growth plans listed above will require additional member involvement if we are to be successful in bringing them to life.  I urge all of you to consider getting involved with one or more of our member-based working committees in 2014.

2014 PGA Merchandise Show Special Guest Speaker & Seminars

Special Guest Speaker

At the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show, The International Clubmakers Guild’s special guest speaker will be Mike Strachura, Senior Editor – Equipment, Golf Digest. 

The seminar will be, “Fitting: The Big Problem and the Best Solution”. 

Strachura will reference articles that he has done in Golf Digest on clubfitting and some of the latest research on the topic from Golf Datatech about average golfers and the subject of custom fitting. Golf Digest has also done several research projects over the years on the effects of custom fitting, its potential impact and general consumer attitudes. Strachura's long-standing opinion is that, “fitting remains the untapped resource for golf improvement”.

This seminar should be considered a “must see” and will be presented on Wednesday afternoon, 1/22, 5:00 – 6:00 PM in the ICG, Level 1, special presentation room.  Strachura’s seminar will be open to all clubmakers, PGA professionals and other interested Show attendees.   

Seminars; Wednesday, 1/22/2014
Room-104A

11:00 AM   “Proper Putter Fitting and A Means to Achieve True Customization  To The Putter”,presented by Jeff Sheets, former Technical Director @ Golfsmith, founder of Sheets Golf Design and currently the chief club designer for Swing Science Golf. 


Sheets will discuss in the different measurements which need to be covered during a proper custom putter fitting include the head design, length, weight, loft, lie and grip size and weight. He will also explain how a center shafted putter or heel shafted putter, off-set vs. no off-set can be used to better match a golfer’s stroke.

1:30 PM  “Getting the Most Out Of Your Launch Monitor To Maximize Your Fitting Sessions”, presented by one of the Flight Scope top field representatives.

In this seminar, Flight Scope will show the attendees how to use the most common numbers for their fittings such as club head speed, ball speed and launch angle but also some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ that the club fitters will also enjoy learning.

Room-104A

9:30 AM  “Another View Of Ball Flight: How Club Fitting & Golf Instruction Demand The Same Results”, presented by Ed Mitchell, Chairman/Founder of Mitchell Golf Equipment Company.

Mitchell will show that the physical objective of swinging a golf club is to create ball flight. The golf ball only responds to what the club head is doing, which is what you need to know to fit or teach for ideal club head/ball impact.

11:00 AM  “Proper Fitting A Golfer In the 21stCentury”, presented by Jim McCleery, who was a PCS Clubmaker of the Year, PCS Top Shop Award of the year and a Golf Digest “Top 100 clubfitter”.

McCleery will discuss fitting strategies and combining a lesson with a fitting; what should be the results? He will also present a process that you won’t find in a fitting cart and touch base on the use of launch monitors, what they will and won’t do for you.   

These seminars will be presented in the ICG, Level 1 presentation room (104A), and they will be open toall clubmakers, PGA professionals and other interested Show attendees.

Four Clubmakers Earn Status as ICG Certified Clubmaker. 


The International Clubmakers Guild (ICG) a non-profit member owned organization formed to service membership in all aspects of the golf industry, announces that the following Clubmakers were given the designation of ICG Certified Clubmaker.

Austin Sanchez - Golfinteligente Hernai SPAIN
Edward V. Galasso - Galasso Clubmaking Ladson, SC
Jacques Lemoyne - The Club House Erie, PA

The ICG Certification Committee designated these individuals as certified after an extensive review and testing process as demonstrated by excellence in the field of golf club assembly and repair using current technology and Clubmaking techniques.  The announcement was made by Steve Newton BOD President of the ICG.  “I am pleased to designate these individuals as recognized by The International Clubmakers Guild as a Fully Certified Clubmaker, as it demonstrates a commit- ment to excellence and a thorough knowledge of club making, repair and fitting,” said Steve Newton President of ICG. 

To achieve the distinction of an ICG Certified Clubmaker, applicants must pass rigorous written and practical skills examinations.  The ICG developed the certification program to ensure that each Certified Clubmaker achieves the highest standard of academic proficiency, applied technology and excellence in craftsmanship.  Candidates must be skilled in all aspects of golf club assembly and repair including re-shafting graphite and steel shafts in various club head designs, putter and iron repairs along with a comprehensive working knowledge of all 21 club performance numbers.
